Project 10 Translation Device

QR CODE self-portrait

I guess we are all familiar with this code-like images that pops up almost everywhere in our life now. Just several years ago, I would still feel "uncanny" when seeing this type of pictures, yet now I use it when buying stuffs, download resources, and even making friends.

In a way, our digital selves are being shrinked down to data form in these QR codes we have. With the QR code, we can add friends, seeing our profiles on devices, etc. Our images are being represented by these images. Therefore, I name this project the

within the Feminist Data Principles

According to the seven princeples Catherine D'lgnazio and Lauren F. Klein introduced in Data Feminism, I chose principle 6 The Numbers Don’t Speak for Themselves as my guide in designing this translation device.

The QR code itself, if we don't scan / use / download it, does not speak for itself. Besides being used by us, it is only a somehow weird image. But when we scan it and give it meanings, it coould represent things beyond our imagination. As I mentioned earlier, our digital selves are represented by these QR Codes, and we are being shrinked to data and parameters.

Design Process

Here is the API I used for this assignment.

For the coding process, I referenced mostly from this YouTube tutorial.
